One of the key ways through which Umberto Eco compares Brother Williams to Sherlock Holmes is through the assessment of the murders of the monks. In the contemporary setting, Sherlock Holmes was a brilliant detective who understood the inner workings of various aspects about the killers. Williams was able to think outside the box and as well, solve mysterious deaths that no one else would have solved.1 Using such an approach, although Brother William was not a detective by nature, his ability to see through crime in a way that most people would not makes him more like Sherlock Holmes. Bringing in the concept of the supernatural, such as demons, also makes this film more like Sherlock Holmes, as the detective was in a mysterious island, whose inner workings were unclear to humans, but were more of a supernatural nature. Reason is the key strategy of any investigation. Bearing in mind that most people do not have a clue on the inner workings of a murder case, because they have little, if any connection with the murderer, using reason is one of the ways through which such mysteries can be solved. Brother Williams was willing to reason and see beyond the trees, to view the forest. In short, he used the various simple details of a case to create a hypothetical bigger picture, which was much closer to the actual truth.
